ABOUT US

I'm Scott Redford and I've always had a thing for clocks and color so in 2014, I started Goathopper in the NW corner of my one car garage. Goathoppers mission is to use reclaimed pallet wood to create handmade rustic wall art that doubles as a curiously cool clock. In addition to being recycled, pallet wood is an ideal medium because it's tough as nails, no two planks are alike and each has its own character rich story to tell.

Some of my achievements in chronological order include:

  • In the 4th grade I ate 23 servings of candied yams in 4 minutes. A Davis cafeteria record that stands today.
  • I received undergraduate and master’s degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University in Mass Communications and Business respectively.
  • I have mastered the color TV remote control and the modern outdoor string trimmer.
  • Most recently, I was ex-communicated from the local smallmouth fishing club for being too loud.
WHAT IS A GOATHOPPER?

It is legend that in many Caribbean villages there used to exist a man called the Goathopper. For landowners, he would scour their fields and collect all of the dried goat dung, prized for its use as a fuel and in making coffee. As payment for his service he would keep 1/2 of the day's dung collection and offer it for sale on his route. Goathoppers were a cheerful and happy go lucky sort and were quick with an amusing joke or story. Our mission is to infuse the Goathopper's spirit into every handmade clock.

WHY DO WE USE PALLET WOOD?

  1. Conservation
We give new life to battered and old pallets. All of our wood is 100% re-purposed so no trees are sacrificed. Moreover, we involve our customers in the effort. When you buy a clock, we plant a tree. We've been called tree huggers on more than one occasion and we're proud of it.

  2. Resilience
It's tough. The blue collar of wood. Otherwise it would not have been selected for pallet duty. Right?

  3. Character
Our wood is worldly and comes from places like Poland, Argentina, Thailand and more. In a previous life it delivered everything from olive oil to umbrellas so each plank has a story to tell. Every bump and nick along the way adds up to a handsome, weathered complexion.
WHY ARE YOUR CLOCKS SPECIAL?

Our clocks are 100% handmade in Richmond Virginia. They are proven conversation starters known for their durability and fetching singularity. The magic begins when we single out pallet wood for its hardiness and character. Paint color is key. Ours are custom created to capture the hues and textures found at the beach. Next, we apply some character via a 10 step, 2 day distressing routine. Your clock now has a personality all its own that will forever be one of a kind. It's now a Goathopper.

SHIPPING AND RETURNS

All clocks are made and shipped out of the Goathopper dojo in Richmond, Virginia. A properly constructed Goathopper takes time - especially considering the lengthy distressing process, so please allow from 10 to 14 days before shipment. We've been told its well worth the wait. In addition to an order confirmation and tracking number you will receive an email notification when your clocks ships, when the postal service marks it as "delivered" and if there is any change in the status of your tracking number (if you select this option).

We want you to be totally smitten with your Goathopper. If you aren't, your item can be returned within 14 business days of receipt provided the appearance and functionality is unchanged. We'll send you a return label via email pronto so you can exchange for another clock, a gift card or cash back to your credit card.

ONE CLOCK, ONE TREE

man planting tree in GuatemalaAt Goathopper, we think it's important to walk the walk. That means giving back to our community and environment in a way that we hope will inspire others. In conjunction with our partner OneTreePlanted, Goathopper commits to planting one tree for every clock purchased. Our goal is to reforest the Amazon so that when Tarzan swings, another rope will be waiting for him.

For the past several centuries, grazing, farming and logging and unplanned development have been hard on the ecosystem. Unfortunately, lobbyists have been successful in influencing the powerful to ease laws related to grazing and conventional land-exhausting agriculture. Protection to the ecosystem has fallen mainly to private or community groups.

WHERE WILL MY TREE BE PLANTED?

Our focus is the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, also known as Mata Atlantica. It initially covered an area equal to 120 million hectares and stretched over 16 Brazilian states. Today, less than 10% of the forest remains in fragmented areas.

Mata Atlantica is a critical component in the planet’s biodiversity yet it is still under attack. Tens of thousands of plant, bird and mammal species call the forest home. Many are indigenous and in fact, Mata Atlantica is home to 60% of Brazil's endangered species.

HOW CAN YOU PLANT A TREE FOR ONLY $1

Here are the numbers. There are some cost variables so we are providing a range :

$.50 - $.30 for one tree sapling to be grown at a nursery
$.20 - $.30 per tree to be planted
$.08 - $.20 per tree average with transport costs, material costs
$.10 - $.22 ongoing maintenance of trees
$.12 - $.15 operating costs
$.03 - $.05 credit card processing fees, transaction costs

WHEN ARE THE TREES PLANTED?

This varies depending on the time of the year. The best time to plant is usually during the rainy season when the soil is at an optimum state.

LIFETIME GUARANTEE

The tough pallet wood from your clock has been battered by forklifts, rain and abuse so it’s not especially needy. While we don’t recommend leaving it in the elements without cover, a Goathopper presently works just fine on a screened porch where last year it ranged from a bitter 5 to a humid 104 degrees. In summary, if you make sure it has a roof over its head, change out the battery when needed and be nice to it, it will last a lifetime. If it doesn't let us know and we'll give you a refund or a fresh clock.

YOU ARE SAFE AND SECURE

Without getting into a deep conversation about secure sockets layer and 128 bit encryption, rest assured that Goathopper utilizes the latest security technology to safeguard your transaction. Better yet, the Goathopper website is PCI (payment card industry) certified. This is a rigorous standard created and tested periodically by VISA, Mastercard and American Express.
